Volume discount
The Volume Discounts feature allows you to offer discounts when multiple units of the same item are purchased. This feature enables you to encourage larger order quantities and increase the average cart size per transaction, thereby boosting overall turnover.
Please note: This feature is completely free to use; there are no additional charges.
How do volume discounts work?
Volume discounts are tiered price reductions that you apply to an offer when a customer purchases a certain quantity of the same product. You can set the discount as you see fit:
- Discount formats: The price reduction can be expressed either as a fixed amount (e.g. “€2 discount”) or as a percentage discount. (e.g. “10% discount”).
- Tiered pricing: You can set multiple quantity thresholds per item, each linked to a different discount rate. For example: 5% discount when you buy 2 or more, 10% discount when you buy 5 or more.
- Validity period: A start date and, optionally, an end date can be set for each promotion.
- Status management: Active discounts can be deactivated at any time and reactivated at a later date.
Important note regarding combinations with other discounts:
Volume discounts cannot be combined with general vouchers. If a voucher is issued for the same offer, only the voucher discount applies; the volume discount does not apply. However, it is possible to combine these with seasonal campaigns, general (cart-based) Kaufland Card XTRA coupons and Kaufland vouchers (codes).
Please note:
When you apply a new volume discount to a product, the existing volume discounts for that product are automatically overridden.
For seasonal campaigns, the campaign price is calculated first (as this is a direct price change) and the volume discount is then applied on that basis.
With Kaufland Card XTRA coupons and Kaufland vouchers, however, the volume discount is deducted first.
How to set up volume discounts
You can create and manage volume discounts either manually in the Seller Portal or via CSV upload.
Manual creation in the Seller Portal
- How to access volume discounts: Log in to the Seller Portal. In the main menu, click on “Marketing” and then select the “Volume discount” tab from the submenu.
- Click on the “Create volume discount” button. Then select the manual option.
- Select the desired sales channel.
- Please note that only one sales channel can be selected per promotional campaign. If you wish to set up discounts for different sales channels, you will need to repeat the process for each sales channel.
- Set the start date for your discount promotion. The default setting is “Immediately”. You can optionally specify an end date.
- Now add the relevant products. Click on “Continue & Add Products”
- Select offers:
- Search for the products by EAN for which you wish to offer volume discounts.
- Select the relevant offers from your list.
- Important: All offers selected in this step will receive the same discount. If you wish to set up different discounts for different offers, repeat this process for each discount configuration or use the CSV upload.
- Set discounts:
- Set at least one quantity threshold (e.g. “2 or more units”). A range of 2 to 3 levels is recommended.
- Set the discount amount for each tier:
- Percentage: Enter a value between 1 and 99 (e.g. “10” for a 10% discount).
- Absolute value: Enter a value greater than 1 (e.g. “2.50” for a discount of €2.50).
- Select offers:
Important: Once volume discounts have been set up, they cannot be edited. To make changes, you must deactivate the existing discount and create a new discount promotion. If you create a second discount for the same offer without first deactivating the existing one, the most recent discount will be displayed and applied.
Creation via CSV upload
CSV upload is a very efficient method for managing a large number of volume discounts.
Navigation to volume discounts:
- Log in to the Seller Portal. In the main menu, click on “Marketing” and then select the “Volume discount” tab from the submenu.
- Click on the “Create volume discount” button. Then select “Upload CSV file”. Download the relevant CSV template for volume discounts from the Seller Portal.
Edit CSV file: Fill in the template following the instructions. Please pay attention to the following fields and their validation rules:
- `ean`: the product’s EAN (European Article Number)
- `discount_type`: Enter `percentage` for percentage discounts or `absolute` for fixed amounts.
- `start_date`: Start date of the discount in the format “YYYY-MM-DD”
- `end_date`: End date of the discount in the format “YYYY-MM-DD” (optional)
- `qty_n`: Quantity threshold for the nth discount (e.g. `qty_1` for the first tier, `qty_2` for the second tier).
- `val_n`: Discount value for the nth tier / Please note the rules for percentage (1–99) and absolute (>1) values.
Important: Please note that there is a limit of 2,000 offers per CSV file. If the limit is exceeded, the file must be split. Please also ensure that you do not change the order of the fields in the file, so that the upload can be processed successfully.
Upload CSV file: Upload the completed and validated CSV file using the same form on the Seller Portal.
FAQS
Can I edit a volume discount after it has been created?
No, volume discounts that have already been set up cannot be edited directly. To make changes, you must deactivate the existing discount and then create a new discount promotion with the desired adjustments.
How do volume discounts interact with other discount schemes?
Volume discounts cannot be combined with vouchers, as vouchers take precedence. However, they can be combined with seasonal campaigns, general (cart-based) Kaufland Card XTRA vouchers and Kaufland vouchers (codes). For seasonal campaigns, the reduced campaign price applies first, and the volume discount is then applied to this. In all other cases, the volume discount is applied first.
Can volume discounts also be managed via the marketplace seller API?
API-based control is not currently available. All settings and changes must be made via the Seller Portal.
What is the maximum number of offers I can upload per CSV file?
Currently, the number of offers per CSV upload is limited to 2,000. If you wish to set up volume discounts for multiple offers at the same time, please split your file accordingly.
Where can I view the performance of my offers with volume discounts?
You can view performance metrics such as sales figures, conversion rates and the discount utilisation rate on the volume discounts overview page in the Seller Portal. There you will find a detailed overview of the success of your discount campaigns.
