EU Battery Regulation

The EU Battery Regulation introduces new obligations for the distribution, labeling, and marketing of batteries and battery-operated products, which will come into effect in phases. Below you will find all the important information and next steps for your business on Kaufland Global Marketplace.

What are your existing obligations?

As of August 18, 2024, all products containing batteries must meet certain labeling requirements. These include:

  • CE marking
  • Operating instructions and safety information
  • Producer identification with name, legal form, address, and, if applicable, brand and contact information
  • For certain types of batteries (e.g., e-bikes, industrial batteries): Additional information on performance and durability, provided in the respective national language (also possible on packaging or in accompanying documents).

Sellers are required to check whether manufacturers and importers comply with these extended labeling obligations. Products that do not meet these requirements must no longer be sold.

From August 18, 2025: Additional obligations for manufacturers and sellers

Starting August 18, 2025, the next central obligations of extended producer responsibility (EPR) will come into effect:

  1. Self-certification on Kaufland Global Marketplace
  2. Submission of battery registration numbers
  3. Indication of battery recycling fees for affected products

1. Self-certification on Kaufland Global Marketplace*

You will be asked in the Seller Portal to confirm with one click that you only offer batteries (including those contained in devices, light vehicles, or other vehicles) that meet all the requirements of extended producer responsibility according to EU regulations.

Where can I find the setting in the Seller Portal?

To perform self-certification, go to your shop settings in the Seller Portal and click on “Legal Texts.” There you will find the checkbox for compliance with the EU Battery Regulation.

2. Submission of battery registration numbers

For all countries where you market batteries, you must provide a valid battery registration number for each: Germany, Poland, France, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Italy. The numbers are specified per seller and will be stored in the EPR compliance area in the Seller Portal. It is not necessary to provide a number for each product or category.

Where do I enter the battery number?

Go to your shop settings in the Seller Portal and click on “EPR Compliance” and then on “+ Add Battery Number.” Here you can enter your battery numbers and indicate whether you are a manufacturer under the EU Battery Regulation. You can add multiple numbers simultaneously by clicking on “+ Add Battery Number.”

3. Indication of battery recycling fees for affected products

You must provide the battery recycling fee for all affected products so that it is displayed transparently and separately from the product price for the end customer. The information can be entered manually in the Seller Portal, via API, or through CSV/XML import.

  1. Manual Entry:
  • Go to your offers in the Seller Portal and click on the offer for which you want to enter the fee.
  • In the “Offer” tab, enter the corresponding value in euros in the “Battery Recycling Fee” field.

Please ensure that you enter the correct amounts for the respective product categories to ensure compliance with the regulations.
You can inquire about the corresponding amounts per category from the Stiftung EAR.

  1. via API:

If you list your offers via the Marketplace Seller API, you can transfer the “battery_participation” field as part of your offer data via API. For more information, please refer to the Marketplace Seller API documentation.

  1. Entry through CSV/XML import

You can also provide the information for the battery recycling fee through file upload.

CSV File:

  • Inventory Feed File: If you use an Inventory Feed file, enter the corresponding data in the “battery_participation” field. The order in which the field appears in the file is irrelevant.
  • Inventory Command File: If you use an Inventory Command file, place the “battery_participation” field in column “Q,” as there are no headers. Otherwise, it cannot be read by the system.

XML File:

  • When using an XML file, there are no specific requirements for transmitting the information regarding the battery recycling fee.

Who is considered a manufacturer?

Manufacturers under the regulation are companies that sell batteries or products with batteries:

  • under their own name/brand in an EU country,
  • commercially import them for the first time from abroad or another EU state into the country,
  • or deliver directly to end customers via distance selling.

Foreign companies must appoint a representative based in the respective country to handle registration. Check the requirements in your target countries in a timely manner, as the procedures are currently still adapting to the new regulation.

Which batteries are affected?

The EU Battery Regulation replaces the previous battery categories with five new categories to enable better traceability and regulation.
