EPR Service by Kaufland in Italy
Your support in case of missing EPR numbers in Italy
In order to sell products on Kaufland.it, you must ensure that you comply with all Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) obligations in Italy. This includes providing a unique EPR number for each category in which you offer products on Kaufland.it.
Here you will find all information on the EPR requirements for Italy.
How does EPR Service by Kaufland work in Italy?
This service provides Kaufland Global Marketplace sellers with EPR numbers for selected categories which are obligatory for sales in Italy. If you do not enter your own EPR numbers for your categories, you can utilise the EPR service for this.
Here’s how to activate and deactivate EPR Service by Kaufland:
- Manual service activation: Activate the EPR service in the Seller Portal under Shop settings > EPR Compliance > EPR Service, by sliding the slider to the right. Once the service is activated, corresponding costs will be incurred. If you no longer wish to use the service, you must manually deactivate it again in the Seller Portal.
- Manual service deactivation: Simply click on the toggle switch for the EPR service in the Seller Portal under EPR Compliance. Once you have deactivated the service, the EPR numbers provided via EPR-Service by Kaufland will be automatically removed from your affected categories.
- Manual service reactivation: If you wish to use the EPR service again, you can manually reactivate it at any time in the Seller Portal under Shop settings > EPR Compliance > EPR-Service and slide the slider to the right for reactivation.

Which services are included?
EPR Management by Kaufland provides the following services:
- Hassle-free selling: If you do not enter your own EPR numbers for your categories, our service will provide you with the required numbers and enter them in your Seller Portal for you.
- Automatic provision of information: The eco-participation fees will be automatically included in your offers, provided they are legally required.
- Transparent reporting: Monthly reports on your sales and the corresponding eco-participation fees are available for you in the Seller Portal.
- Automated notification: Your sales history and eco-participation fees are automatically submitted to the relevant Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO).
- Automated payment: The service pays the eco-participation fees on your behalf based on your sales. The costs incurred are invoiced accordingly without additional surcharges and debited from your seller account.
- No missed deadlines: The required EPR reports relating to your sales and the amount of eco-participation fees are submitted on time.
Which EPR obligations for sellers does the service not cover?
Please note that you are responsible for fulfilling the following obligations independently, as they are not covered by the service:
- Legal invoice information: In Italy, there are specific requirements regarding the inclusion of EPR information on invoices and commercial documents, which you, as a seller, must comply with yourself.
- Specifications for your shipping packaging: Proper labelling of your shipping packaging. Read more about this here.
- Repairability and durability index: The seller is still responsible for uploading the repairability and durability indexes for affected products. Missing information on repairability and durability can result in your offers being hidden.
- Information on return options in your GTCs: The corresponding return conditions for the obligation to take back old products must be included in your General Terms and Conditions (GTCs) in the Seller Portal under Shop Settings and “Legal texts” in the GTCs tab. You are responsible for obtaining information about the take-back options offered by your responsible PRO.
Product and special categories covered by our service:
You need an EPR number for each product category in which you market products in Italy that fall under the EPR regulation.
Example:If you sell packaged electrical appliances, you need an EPR number for the packaging and a separate EPR number for electrical appliances (WEEE). If the relevant electrical product also contains battery components, you will need an additional EPR number for the “batteries” category.
EPR Management by Kaufland does not cover all categories.
In the following overview, you can see which product categories the service provides EPR numbers for in Italy:
| Product category | EPR code | Categories included in the service | Subcategories not included |
| Packaging* | – | Yes* | – |
| Electrical and electronic equipment | (WEEE/RAEE) | Yes | – |
| Batteries and accumulators | PILE/BATT | Yes | – |
| Tyres | – | No | |
| Polyethylene products | – | No | |
| Mineral oils** | – | No** |
* For sellers with registered office in Italy, the packaging category is excluded from the service coverage. Sellers are legally obliged to register with the relevant authority for the packaging category themselves.
** Sellers who sell products from the mineral oils category are legally obliged to carry out an independent registration with the relevant authority.
Important:
Since 6 different categories are affected by the EPR regulation, it can happen that several EPR numbers are needed for a single product.
Overview of service costs
The costs for the service are broken down as follows:
- Service fee: €1.90 per product category and month in which an EPR number is used. The service fee is only incurred if one or more sales have taken place in the respective category in the month concerned. The service fee is charged for the registration, automated calculation and payment of eco-participation fees and the timely submission of the required reports to recognised PROs.
- Eco-participation fees: Legally mandated fees that vary depending on the product category and sales volume. The amount of the fees is based on the official PRO rates. EPR Service by Kaufland pays these fees on behalf of sellers. The costs incurred are passed on to sellers on a one-to-one basis without a commission surcharge and billed accordingly. Billing occurs on a monthly basis.
- Since the service currently covers 3 categories, the maximum monthly service fee is €5.70 (3 × €1.90) if you sell in all categories covered by the EPR service.
- You can view the list of eco-participation fees here.
Example calculation of fees:

- A seller sells products in 2 categories subject to EPR on Kaufland.it.
- These are electronic products that are packaged and shipped to end customers.
- In this example, the seller pays a monthly service fee of €3.80 plus VAT (€1.90 x 2) for 2 categories used within the EPR service.
- Depending on the product category and sales volume, eco-participation fees also apply.
EPR reporting to authorities
As part of the “standard reporting”, Kaufland Global Marketplace is obligated to comply with the reporting guidelines of the Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs). The eco-participation fees are therefore calculated on the following basis:
- the EPR category of the product,
- the number or weight of products sold,
- product attributes such as weight, length, screen size or volume of each product sold,
The fees per item are based on the official price lists of the respective collecting societies, which are set and published once a year.
For sellers who use the EPR service by Kaufland, Kaufland Global Marketplace handles the submission of the required data to the authorities and pays the eco-participation fees in advance on your behalf. These costs will then be billed via the monthly invoice from Kaufland Global Marketplace.
Note: The price lists with the eco-contribution fees can be found here.
Minor discrepancies in fees, amounting to a few cents, result from statutory commercial rounding-up and ensure full compliance with the national reporting standards set by the local authorities.
What product data is required?
Kaufland Global Marketplace calculates the eco-participation fees based on the product data available on the marketplace. Providing complete product data ensures that the calculation of the fees for your items is as accurate as possible. Incorrect or incomplete product data may result in incorrect and potentially higher eco-participation fees.
| EPR category | Type of product | Required data |
| Packaging | General | Food / non-food distinction and product price: The eco-contribution is calculated as a percentage of the total price – 0.17% for food products and 0.09% for non-food products |
| Electrical and electronic equipment | General | Weight |
| Batteries and accumulators | General | Battery weight |
| Tyres | General | Weight |
| Polyethylene products | General | Weight |
Important:
In the event of missing or incorrect data, Kaufland Global Marketplace will perform the reporting on your behalf based on the stored product data. This may affect the classification of your products and could result in higher fees for you if the required data is missing or incorrect.
How to provide your product data
To ensure your products are categorised correctly and your future fees are calculated accurately in accordance with the standard reporting method, please go through the following steps:
Step 1 – Review of the eco-participation fees
- In the Seller Portal, download the “EPR reports”. To do this, go to Reports > Request reports > Offered items > Kaufland.it > “EPR reports”
- You will find the requested file under Reports > Processed Reports. Review how each of your products has been categorised and which fees apply to your products
Step 2 – Check your eco-participation fees against the price list
- Compare the fees assigned by the system with the official price lists to ensure there are no discrepancies in the fee amounts or product categorisation.
- If the EPR category, eco-code or eco-participation fees differ, follow the instructions in step 3.
Step 3a – Correct your product data
If the product data assigned to your offers is incorrect or incomplete, you can update your product data using one of the three options below. Your suggestions are checked by an automated prioritisation system before being applied to your products on the marketplace.
- Customise individual products via the Seller Portal :
- Navigate to Offers in the menu and select Kaufland.it.
- Select the desired offer from the list.
- Open the “Product data” tab and switch to “Attributes”.
- Select the appropriate attribute (e.g. weight).
- Enter the relevant data.
- Finally, click on “Submit proposal”.
2. Bulk upload via CSV file:
- Open the Seller Portal and go to Reports > Product Data > Kaufland.it.
- Download the “EPR attributes of your products” report.
- Delete columns that don’t apply to your products – e.g. “screen_size” if you don’t sell TVs.
- Fill in the missing data or correct any errors. Leave existing correct data as is.
- Save the file.
- Upload the file via Product Data Imports .
3. Bulk upload: via API
- Transfer your product data via the Marketplace Seller API.
- You can find more information in the Seller API documentation.
- Use the column names from the CSV template above if you need help with attribute names and format.
Step 3b – Appeal incorrect product categorisation and attributes
You can use the EPR appeal process if you have already tried to update your product data but it is still incorrect, or if the assigned EPR category, eco-code or eco-participation fee is incorrect:
To submit an appeal:
- In the Seller Portal, go to EPR Compliance for Kaufland.it or to the offer details page of the affected offer.
- Click on the “Appeal classification” button at the bottom.
- Submit the details via the contact form by selecting Seller Portal > EPR and choosing the reason for appeal.
Please note:
It may take several weeks to process the appeal.
Step 4 – Final check
Once your changes have been processed, download the “EPR attributes of your products” report again and check that your updated fees and categorisations have been applied correctly.
Common errors in product data
In the event of missing or incorrect data, Kaufland Global Marketplace will perform the reporting on your behalf based on the stored product data. This may affect the classification of your products and could result in higher fees for you if the required data is missing or incorrect.
Therefore, pay attention to the correct units: A common mistake is specifying the wrong unit of measurement – e.g. kilogram (kg) instead of gram (g) for weight, or metre (m) instead of centimetre (cm) in measurements. This not only leads to incorrect product categorisation, but usually to an eco-participation fee that is far too high. Therefore, please check that you have entered the correct unit of measurement for each entry.
FAQs
Which and how many EPR numbers do I need?
You need an EPR number for each product category in which you market products in France that fall under the EPR regulation. Since there are over 20 different categories, it is likely that you will need a combination of several EPR numbers to have your offers activated.
Does the service also apply to sellers based in Italy?
Sellers based in Italy can use the service for all categories covered by the service – with the exception of the “Packaging” category. According to the rules of CONAI, the responsible PRO for packaging, sellers based in Italy must register independently for this category. For all other categories, the service is also available to sellers based in Italy.
Are mineral oils covered by the service?
No. If you sell mineral oils in Italy, you must register on the CONOU website independently. For this category, the EPR Service by Kaufland does not cover the “payment on your behalf”.
Which EPR obligations remain with me as a seller that the service does not cover?
As a seller, you must comply with further obligations under Extended Producer Responsibility in Italy – in particular physical product labelling and take-back obligations. You can find an overview here.
Can I use EPR registration numbers from other EU countries?
No. For products sold in Italy, you need your own valid EPR registration numbers – even if you are already registered in other EU countries.
When and how is the service fee billed?
There is a monthly service fee for using EPR Service by Kaufland, which you can find as usual in your monthly invoice. The fee consists of the service fee and the product-related eco-participation fees ( see calculation example ).
Can I activate and deactivate the service at any time?
Yes. Yes, you can activate and deactivate the service as you wish in the Seller Portal. You can find further information here.
Why do I receive a very high EPR eco-contribution for a small item?
The eco-contribution is calculated based on the product attributes you have entered. If there are no product attributes, or attributes that are obviously incorrect, specified for your item, the highest applicable contribution rate will be calculated automatically. Therefore, please check that you have entered the correct product attributes with the correct unit of measurement (e.g. grams/kilograms for weight, centimetres/metres for dimensions) for all EPR relevant items. You can update the product attributes at any time in the Seller Portal.
Why is the eco-participation fee too high despite stored attributes?
A common mistake is specifying the wrong unit of measurement – e.g. kilograms (kg) instead of grams (g) for weight or metres (m) instead of centimetres (cm) for measurements. This not only leads to incorrect product categorisation, but also usually to a significantly excessive eco-participation fee. Therefore, please check that you have used the correct unit of measurement for every entry.
What happens if I don’t specify any product attributes for my item?
If the required product attributes (weight and/or dimensions) are missing, the highest contribution rate of the respective EPR category will automatically be applied to your item. This can lead to significant additional costs. To avoid this, please enter the correct product attributes for all items relevant for EPR. You can find out exactly how this works here.
I am a manufacturer and I have entered the wrong weight – how do I correct this?
Please correct the weight as soon as possible directly in the Seller Portal. For past invoices that were generated based on incorrect data, please contact Seller Support at Kaufland Global Marketplace.
Where can I get help in determining the necessary EPR numbers for my products?
Refer to the overview of all EPR product categories covered by the EPR Service by Kaufland in Spain. You can find out which additional categories are affected by Extended Producer Responsibility and how you can register for further EPR numbers here.
