Kaufland.nl – EPR guidelines for the Netherlands
The EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) guidelines regulate manufacturers’ responsibility to collect, recycle and dispose of products in certain categories.

Who needs to register for the EPR guidelines in the Netherlands?
In the Netherlands, you are considered a “manufacturer” (“producent/importeur”) and are required to register if you place products from the affected categories on the Dutch market for the first time. In particular, this includes:
The following actors must register for the EPR guidelines in the Netherlands:
- Manufacturers who bring products to the Dutch market under their own brand or name
- Importers who bring products into the Netherlands
- Distance sellers and marketplaces that sell packaged products directly to end customers (B2C) in the Netherlands, regardless of their location. This also includes shipping packaging (cardboard boxes, shipping bags, adhesive tape).

What do I have to do to fulfil the Extended Producer Responsibility requirements in the Netherlands?
Step 1: Registration with the responsible PRO
Register for each affected category with the relevant Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO):
- Other categories (tyres, textiles, mattresses, etc.): Registration with the respective PRO.
- Packaging and single-use plastics (SUP): Registration with Verpact .
- Electrical and electronic equipment and batteries: Registration with Stichting OPEN . Registration in the Nationaal (W)EEE Register is done automatically via Stichting OPEN.
Registration time: approx. 2–3 weeks per waste stream.
Step 2: Quantity Reporting
The seller must regularly report the quantities placed on the market to their PRO (Professional Intelligence Service) by category. For packaging, the report is sent to Verpact (and possibly to the ILT). The reported quantities (number of pieces, volume or weight) form the basis for calculating the recycling fees.
Step 3: Payment of the recycling fee (Afvalbeheersbijdrage)
In addition to reporting the quantity, sellers pay the recycling fee (for packaging, the “Afvalbeheersbijdrage”) to their PRO. The amount depends on the material, packaging or product type and the reported quantity.
Step 4: Include the EPR number on invoices
If a registration number is assigned for the respective category, it must be shown on the customer invoices .
Step 5: WEEE 1:1 take-back of old devices
If you offer electrical and electronic equipment in the Netherlands, you are obligated to offer the free take-back of a similar old device when a new device is sold (1:1 take-back). Enter the information about return options in your GTCs in the Seller Portal under Shop Settings > Legal texts > GTCs .
Enter the EPR number(s) in the Seller Portal
If you have a registration number for batteries, you can enter it in the Seller Portal:
- In the Seller Portal , go to Shop Settings and select the EPR Compliance tab.
- Use the options in the top right corner to ensure that Kaufland.nl is selected as the sales country.
- Click on “Add another EPR number”, select the product category and enter your number.
- Click on “Submit and have it verified”.
Important – personal responsibility for EPR compliance:
As a seller, the complete and timely fulfilment of all EPR obligations is solely your responsibility. You are required to register independently, report your quantities, pay the applicable fees, and inform yourself about country-specific requirements. Violations may result in fines and official sanctions.
Summary of your seller obligations in the Netherlands
- You are responsible for your own EPR compliance – even without verification by Kaufland Global Marketplace
- Registration for the affected categories with the responsible PRO (Verpact or Stichting OPEN)
- Registration for single-use plastics regardless of quantity
- Regular quantity reporting to PRO
- Payment of the recycling fee
- EPR number must be included on invoices.
